According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 40 Americans—75% of whom are fully vaccinated against COVID-19— have been diagnosed with the new Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2. South African Data Show Pfizer’s COVID-19 Vaccine Is Not as Effective Against Omicron

New research out of South Africa, one of the first countries to report the new SARS-CoV-2 variant—Omicron—shows that the Pfizer vaccine is not as successful at preventing hospitalization among those with COVID-19. The study found that while the Pfizer vaccine reduced hospitalizations by 93% among those with the Delta variant, it only reduced hospitalizations by 70% in those infected with Omicron.
