Japanese researchers have discovered that the presence of diabetes seems to be the most significant indicator of rapidly progressing COVID-19 disease. The study included more than 100 patients who were hospitalized for mild COVID-19 illness; more than half presented with type 2 diabetes. Of those patients who moved from moderate illness to severe disease that necessitated intubation, 88% had type 2 diabetes.
