Japanese researchers have discovered that the presence of diabetes seems to be the most significant indicator of rapidly progressing COVID-19 disease. The study included more than 100 patients who were hospitalized for mild COVID-19 illness; more than half presented with type 2 diabetes. Of those patients who moved from moderate illness to severe disease that necessitated intubation, 88% had type 2 diabetes.

West Virginia University (WVU) School of Dentistry has received two $25,000 gifts to increase educational opportunities for future dentists and dental hygienists. The funding will endow the school’s existing Project Smile Fund. Lora Graves, DDS, and Bryan Dye, FACP, ABP, married associate professors in the School of Dentistry, matched a $25,000 contribution from Sanjay Chaudry, MD, for a total of $50,000, according to WVU.
