Study Launched to Investigate High Rate of HPV Infection Among Those With HIV

While people living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can enjoy long, healthy lives with today’s treatments, they still experience a much higher rate of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection than those without HIV, putting them at risk for oral cancer. Why this population experiences such high levels of HPV infection is not well understood. Researchers at Emory University in Atlanta are determined to change that. With the support of a 5-year, $3.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, researchers are initiating a study of 500 subjects that will investigate the relationships between oral bacteria, periodontal diseases, and the immune response among those with HIV and HPV infection.
