Aerosol-Based COVID-19 Prevention Tool May Be on the Way

New research has elucidated SARS-CoV-2’s pathway into the body’s cells, which provides insights into how to block infection with COVID-19. Researchers from Belgium’s Catholic University of Louvain hope to use this knowledge to create an aerosol-based antiviral therapy to prevent COVID-19 infection. The discovery hinges on blocking the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein from attaching to cells, thus preventing the virus from interacting at all with the cell surface. This approach is designed to work regardless of whether a virus mutates. The researchers will begin murine testing of an aerosol-based antiviral therapy that can be used to eradicate the virus once infected and prevent it in the presence of exposure.
