Your gums are equally as important as your teeth. The biggest threat to the health of your gums is a preventable infection called periodontal (gum) disease. It most often occurs from poor oral hygiene habits; however, researchers at Tufts University investigated the relationship between the infection and stress. Believe it or not, there is a direct connection between the two. If your life is stressful, here’s whay you need to know about gum disease in Plattsburg, so your gums aren’t another thing you need to worry about.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection in the gingival tissue caused by bacteria found in tartar buildup. It causes your gums to become red and inflamed. They may even bleed. If the infection is not treated quickly, it will destroy the supporting structures of your teeth. Eventually, it can cause them to loosen and fall out. In fact, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss.

The complications of gum disease don’t stop at your mouth. The bacteria can also enter your bloodstream, increasing your risk of several health issues, like cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetic complications.

Can Stress Cause Gum Disease?

When you’re under a lot of stress, you might break routine or cut corners. You might skip brushing before bed or flossing each day as you struggle to meet your daily responsibilities. This will cause bacteria to build in your mouth. Unfortunately, if you’re under significant stress, it can cause imbalances in your body than can affect the immune system. This will allow the harmful bacteria to thrive, significantly increasing your risk of gum disease.

High stress levels cause your body to produce cortisol, which acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. When it’s produced by the adrenal gland, it encourages mast cells to create proteins while also increasing inflammation. The cells mediate inflammation, which can cause gum disease to progress quickly.

Can I Prevent Gum Disease?

Although gum disease is common, there are several things you can do to prevent it, like reducing your stress levels and:

  • Brushing your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes each session.
  • Using a high-quality dental floss to clean in between each tooth.
  • Visiting your dentist at least twice a year for a cleaning and checkup.
  • Limiting your consumption of sugar.
  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco.
  • Don’t drink alcohol in excess.

If you develop any signs of gum disease, don’t wait until it’s too late to contact your periodontist in Plattsburg. They will create the customized treatment plan you need to stop the infection in its tracks. When combined with stress-relieving techniques, you can ensure your smile will stay healthy.
