A Rose May Be More Than Just a Rose

Researchers at Japan’s Tokyo University discovered that the part of the rose that creates its lovely fragrance, β-damascone, a natural immunomodulator, offers anti-inflammatory properties. Authors of the study, which was recently published in the journal Frontiers Nutrition, surmise that β-damascone may be useful as an immunomodulatory drug to help the body fight cancer, infection, and disease. It may be particularly effective against inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-6, IL-12p40, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, contributors to periodontal inflammation.
