According to researchers in the United Kingdom, changes to the tongue’s appearance—including discoloration and enlargement—may be symptomatic of COVID-19. While traditional COVID-19 symptoms, such as fever, cough, and loss of taste and smell, are often used in screening, COVID-19 infection may present with a variety of more unusual signs, including many in the oral cavity, such as bumps and patches on the tongue, oral ulcers, and swelling in the mouth.
