Dental Hygienist Fights to Keep Kids’ Caries-Prevention Program Alive

Myra Nikitas, RDH

Myra Nikitas, RDH, a dental hygienist with Sealing Smiles Across New Hampshire, addressed the Nashua, New Hampshire Board of Education, advocating for continued support for its caries-prevention pilot program. Seeking financial assistance, Nikitas discussed exploring grant opportunities and engaging with a city grant writer to sustain the initiative, emphasizing its integration into Nashua students’ curriculum. Launched in November, the program delivers free dental services, including screenings, fluoride varnish application, and dental sealants, targeting elementary and middle school students. Supported by the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services Oral Health Program, the program has screened more than 570 students, applied 3,700 sealants, and administered 570 fluoride applications since its inception. Additionally, it addresses barriers to dental healthcare, offering referrals and financial aid for families, with a focus on mitigating untreated tooth decay, which is particularly prevalent in Nashua. Initially funded through June 30, 2024, the program’s sustainability remains a priority for Nikitas and stakeholders, highlighting its vital role in promoting oral health among Nashua’s youth.
