California Offers Loan Repayment and Scholarships to Grow Oral Health Workforce

The state of California is serious about growing its oral health workforce in order to improve access to care for vulnerable populations. California’s Department of Health Care Access and Information has programs for dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants, as well as students. The loan repayment program offers up to $50,000 in loan repayment for clinicians willing to spend 1 to 2 years working in health professional shortage areas. Dental students can receive $25,000 and dental hygiene students can earn $15,000 for tuition in exchange for a 1-year commitment to working in underserved areas.
