Porcelain vs Composite Veneers: Which Veneer Type Is Right For You?

Real patient's teeth before and after veneers

While veneers are popular, a variety of types are appearing. You can choose from an array of materials, brands, etc.

But is one better than the rest?

We can answer that! In this blog, we’ll discuss the differences and similarities between the 2 main types of veneers: composite and porcelain veneers.

Let’s get started.

What do veneers fix?

People get veneers for several reasons. They’re often used to fix:

  • Stained or discolored teeth
  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Crooked or misshapen teeth
  • Gaps in teeth
  • Misaligned teeth

Both types of veneers can help you achieve your smile goals, but it all depends on the results you desire, your budget, and your time.

What’s the difference between porcelain veneers and composite veneers?

Composite veneers are typically made from a tooth-colored resin. They’re applied directly to the front of your teeth.

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are adhered to the outer surface of your teeth. Due to porcelain’s translucent properties, they catch light similar to natural teeth and appear more lifelike than composite veneers.

Additionally, porcelain veneers are stain resistant!

That means you don’t have to worry about staining your beautiful teeth when drinking coffee or wine.

How long does it take to get veneers?

Composite veneers usually can be done in one visit. The resin is added to your teeth, cured, then polished. You’ll walk out the same day with your new smile.

It’ll likely take 2 visits to get porcelain veneers. During the first appointment, we’ll make your impressions to send to the lab.

You’ll wear your temporary veneers for about 2-3 weeks and then at your second appointment, we’ll place your permanent veneers.

Temporary veneers not only protect your teeth while you’re waiting for the permanent set, but they also allow you to get accustomed to the feeling of your future smile!

How long do veneers last?

Composite veneers typically last 4-8 years.

Porcelain veneers last around 10 years, on average. But with excellent maintenance, they can last up to 20 years!

The longevity of your veneers will depend on how you take care of them.

For the best results:

  • Maintain regular oral hygiene (brush, floss, mouthwash)
  • Use a whitening toothpaste
  • Avoid eating sticky and hard foods (chewing ice, hard candy, etc.)
  • Kick any tobacco habits
  • Keep up with regular visits

Why do porcelain veneers last longer than composite?

Porcelain veneers are extremely durable and act like your natural teeth.

They’re much stronger than composite veneers and much less likely to chip.

How much do veneers cost?

Because every smile is unique, veneers are customized to your look. The cost will ultimately depend on your specific case.

On average, composite veneers cost between $400-$1,500 per tooth.

Porcelain veneers generally cost between $925 to $2,500 per tooth.

To get an exact quote, you must come in for a consultation.

Are veneers worth it?

Many people love veneers and think that they’re a worthwhile investment!

Here’s what one of our patients said about veneers:

They put veneers on my front 4 top teeth, and I absolutely love them. It completely changed my smile! I’m thrilled with them and my family loves them so much that now both of my sisters and my husband want veneers. So it’s caught on. But the good news is no one can tell that they aren’t my original teeth. People don’t know what exactly has changed about me, but I’m definitely smiling a lot more. I just think they’re natural and beautiful!

Kind words from Kim

Both types of veneers transform your smile, but porcelain veneers are a stronger, more long-term solution.
