What is a Full Mouth Restoration? 

As you can probably tell from the name, a full mouth restoration is when we rebuild or replace all of the teeth in a patient’s mouth. It is a combination of esthetics and restorative dentistry that works to improve the health, function, and appearance of a smile. The American College of Prosthodontists explains that, in general, any dental treatment that affects all of the teeth is called full mouth restoration or reconstruction. The types of treatments that can fall under the umbrella term full mouth restoration include:

• Onlays: This is a treatment for decay. These fit inside the tooth and extend onto the chewing surface of a back tooth to replace one or more cusps. 
• Crowns: Also known as a ‘cap’ that covers the tooth, crowns restore the normal function and appearance of the tooth. They may be for patients who has large fillings, root canals, grinds their teeth, or has misshapen or discolored teeth.
• Bridges: Dental bridges help replace one or more missing teeth. Teeth on both sides of a missing tooth get ready for a crown. After this, a false tooth is joined to the crowns. Next, the entire bridge is cemented to those teeth.
• Veneers: These are used to modify the shape and color of teeth. Typically, they are used on patients that have teeth that are misshapen, discolored, or chipped. They are thin shells of porcelain that are internally etched and bonded to the enamel of the natural teeth. 
• Dental Implants: Dental implants are metal titanium cylinders that are surgically placed in the jawbone where teeth are missing. These replace the roots of missing teeth and support single crowns, bridges, and dentures. 
• Dentures: Another replacement for missing teeth, complete dentures replace all teeth and partial dentures only replace some teeth. 

Candidates for Full Mouth Restoration

A full mouth restoration helps when a smile suffers from decay or damage — or when it just doesn’t look like what you want it to. At Mountain Aire Dentistry, your dental health is never beyond hope. Dr. Bockrath may suggest a full mouth restoration for patients who have have:

• Tooth decay: This can cause the weakening of your enamel and put your teeth at great health risk. Cavities can grow large and affect nerves and cause tooth fractures if left untreated. An untreated cavity can cause an infection and destroy the tooth’s pulp. Depending on the severity of the case, the tooth may have to be removed. 
• Periodontal (gum) disease: Gum disease is a gum infection that affects the soft tissue within the mouth. If left untreated, it can destroy the bones that support the teeth and lead to loose teeth or tooth loss altogether. 
• Cracked or fractured teeth: Cracked or fractured teeth can leave the tooth exposed and make a patient more at risk of developing tooth decay or infection. 
• Infected teeth: Also known as a tooth abscess, an infection in the teeth can cause inflammation and pain at the tooth’s root. When this occurs, it can be painful. This can result in tooth loss.
• Misshapen teeth: A cosmetic reason for a full mouth restoration, some patients with misshapen teeth opt for a restoration to give them a smile that they are confident with.
