Consensus on Whether COVID-19 Boosters Are Necessary Remains Elusive

While booster shots to the COVID-19 vaccination are recommended for those who are immunocompromised, whether healthy, previously vaccinated individuals need a booster remains an unanswered question. A group of public health experts recently published an opinion piece in The Lancet asserting that booster shots to the COVID-19 vaccines are not needed among healthy populations. The group incudes two employees of the United States Food and Drug Administration. However, in a poll of more than 550 US physicians, 71% stated they believe COVID-19 vaccination should be followed by a booster shot to lengthen its efficacy. The World Health Organization is also urging wealthy countries to ensure that residents of lower income nations have an opportunity to receive a COVID-19 vaccine before booster shots are disseminated.
