CDC Adjusts Recommendations on Timing of Second Doses for COVID-19 Vaccines

On January 21, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) changed its guidelines for when the second dose of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines need to be administered. The original recommendations were to administer the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine 21 days after the initial shot and, for the Moderna vaccine, 28 days after the first inoculation. While the CDC advises that this protocol remains the gold standard, the organization now states that the second dose of both vaccines can be administered up to 6 weeks after the initial dose and still remain effective.
