7 Ways to Keep Your Teeth Healthy During the Holidays

7-ways-to-keep-your-teeth-healthy-during-the-holidays

The holiday season is here! For many people, this means holiday parties and holiday drinks. This also means the holiday season brings with it some unwanted side effects like sugar overload, tooth decay, and even bad breath. If you want to keep your teeth healthy during the holidays then these 7 tips will help you out!

7 Ways to Keep Your Teeth Healthy During the Holidays

#1. Skip the gum!

Sticky, gummy candy and sugary breath mints are both foods that don’t promote healthy teeth. While they can provide you with a small burst of sugar, neither of these foods are beneficial to your teeth. If you want to freshen up after you enjoy treats during the holidays, then opt for other alternatives like mouthwash or toothpaste.

#2. Watch what you drink!

While water is healthy for your teeth, sugary holiday drinks like hot cocoa and pumpkin spice lattes are not. While we encourage you to enjoy your favorite beverage during the holidays in moderation, it’s important to do just that — enjoy them in moderation.

#3. Brush your teeth after eating sweets!

After you eat candy or drink something with sugar in it, it’s important to brush your teeth. Otherwise, the sugars will be left on your teeth and can cause them harm. Brushing thoroughly will ensure that you get rid of the sugars before they have a chance to do any damage. However, it’s important to wait at least 30 minutes after enjoying your favorite treats before brushing your teeth. Right after eating, your teeth are more vulnerable to damage. Rather, right after eating, rinse with water and wait at least half an hour before you brush your teeth.

#4. Cut down on snacking!

While it may be hard, try to cut down on your daily snacking during the holidays because this will reduce the sugars that are left in your mouth after you eat them. If you want to snack throughout the day, then opt for healthier alternatives like fruits or vegetables over sugary or carb-filled snacks.

#5. Avoid sticky, sugary foods!

The harder you chew a food the longer it will take to break down. This helps reduce the amount of sugar that ends up in your mouth. Try to limit the holiday popcorn balls and caramel apples, both of which can cause great harm to your smile.

#6. Stay hydrated!

Aside from keeping you healthy, water is also important for teeth because your saliva washes away sugars that can cause tooth decay. If you want to make sure the sugar doesn’t stay on your teeth then drinking water throughout the day will keep harmful sugars off of them.

#7. Don’t skip the floss!

While brushing is great for your teeth, it can’t remove plaque and bacteria between teeth like dental floss does. If you want to keep those spaces clean then make sure to floss after eating or drinking something that might cause damage during the holidays.

What to Do if You Experience Dental Pain During the Holidays

If you’re experiencing dental pain during the holidays, then there’s a few things you can do to try and alleviate the pain. First of all, it’s important to take good care of your teeth with a routine cleaning and hygiene practice that includes brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. If cavities have already formed, then a trip to the dentist for a cavity filling should help. After all, pain from cavities can be very detrimental — especially during the holidays!

Another way to help alleviate dental pain is by using non-prescription pain relievers like ibuprofen. The holidays can be very stressful, especially if you’re hosting or attending parties and events. During these times, stress can cause discomfort in your mouth which manifests as painful teeth. Over the counter pain medication can work wonders!
