Chewing Gum May Help Reduce Transmission of SARS-CoV-2

New research out of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine has found that a chewing gum containing the plant protein angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) may help “trap” the novel coronavirus, preventing it from transmitting via saliva. A clinical trial is now in development.

Penn Medicine will conduct a new clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a chewing gum designed by School of Dental Medicine researchers to trap SARS-CoV-2 in the saliva. Those who enroll in the clinical trial will be given a packet of a dozen experimental tablets of gum.
